Rome’s Colosseum Reopens At Night

Night tours of the Colosseum will be available again this year, and for a longer period of time. The event known as ‘La Luna sul Colosseo’ will in fact continue until December 31.

The 75-minute tour allows you to explore the dungeons, tunnels and interior arches. Tours begin from the arena floor, where you can see the depth of the underground area, the galleries’ recesses and the impressive succession of the monument’s arches, made especially spellbinding by the evening lighting.

You will be accompanied by a guide who will recount the fascinating stories of the gladiators, and give you information about the history and architecture of the monument. When you visit the underground area, you will be able to see the spaces where the gladiators and wild beasts waited before appearing on stage, and you will understand how they were lifted up to the arena level.

Here’s the calendar for the night openings of the Colosseum:
March: Saturdays only.
April-May: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
June to September: every day.
October: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
November: Friday and Saturday. December: Saturdays only.

The visit includes the exhibition, “Colosseum. An Icon.” Tours are offered in Italian, English and Spanish, starting at 8 pm until midnight (last entry at 10:50 pm). Entrance fee is €20.
