Experts from the Decentralized Culture Directorate of Cusco (DDCC) have unearthed architectural ruins dating back over 3,000 years in Marcavalle archaeological area, located in South-Andean Cusco region.
The finds include a 7-meter-diameter circular wall made of stone and mud belonging to pre-Inca Marcavalle culture in what is today a youth rehabilitation center.
According to Luz Marina Monroy, archaeologist in charge of the research, the ring-shaped structure would have been used as a dwelling and a ritual site.

A glimpse of the former Peruvian priestess, the Lady of Cao, can now be seen in a replica of her face (pictured) unveiled by culture officials and archaeologists in Lima, Peru, on Monday

She died in her twenties some 1,700 years ago and ruled over a desert valley in ancient Peru, where her elaborately tattooed body was wrapped in 20 layers of fabric and buried with weapons and gold objects.

But a glimpse of the former priestess, the Lady of Cao, can now be seen in a replica of her face unveiled by culture officials and archaeologists on Monday.

Using 3D forensics technology, the replica was based on the Lady of Cao's skull structure and took 10 months to create.

The international team of researchers behind the effort, led by experts at Peru's El Brujo museum where the mummy is currently on display, first took pictures of the Lady of Cao's remains with a state-of-the-art, handheld laser scanner.

The scanner was designed for industrial use and is now commonly used in forensic investigations.
The scanned data was then entered into a computer, which digitally stripped away her facial skin to reveal her skull bones.

Using different software, the team then placed 'tissue-depth markers' on the skull - another common forensics technique - and added tissues to the model based on average facial structures worked out from other Peruvian mummies.

'It's the exact same process you'd go through hands-on in the traditional method, adding clay to a model, but it's rolled into the digital environment now,' Joe Mullins, a consultant on the project, told National Geographic.

The discovery of the Lady of Cao's mummified remains in 2005 shattered the belief that the ancient Moche society, which occupied the Chicama Valley from about 100 to 700 AD, was patriarchal.
Several Moche female mummies have been found since in graves with objects denoting a high political and religious standing.

Archaeologists believe the Lady of Cao died due to complications of childbirth but otherwise lived a healthy life.

Her arms and legs were covered with tattoos of snakes, spiders and other supernatural motifs.

A group claims to have found an ancient, mummified alien in Peru.

Unfortunately the claim – which the group have invited people to decide on for themselves – doesn't appear to be true.

The mummy looks impressive: it has three long fingers and toes on each hand and foot, is covered in a white powder, and looks like the extraterrestrials of fiction. But unfortunately it appears to be fictional itself.

The alien was included in a video posted by the Gaia website and has since spread around the world, with videos being viewed over a million times. It shows apparent experts talking about the find and suggesting that it might be out of this world, as well as extensive looks at the alien itself.

"A new anomalous discovery has been unearthed in Peru," reads the description on the introductory video, which has been viewed more than a million times. "Join Gaia's ongoing investigation and decide for yourself if this is proof of a non-human species."

The videos are thought to have been seen many more times on Gaia's own site, which doesn't make its viewership public.

But unfortunately people have decided for themselves that it probably isn't proof of a non-human species, and in fact probably a hoax. The first clue is the look of the mummy itself – if it were truly ancient, it's hard to imagine how it could be so well preserved, and the white look of the alien appears uncannily like plastercast.

That is just the beginning of the concerns: as IFLScience points out, the video includes experts who don't actually appear to be affilaited with the institutions claimed, and who make comments about DNA that don't appear to withstand scrutiny. The experts claim they have been able to identify the alien having a missing chromosome, for instance – but if they had been able to extract its DNA, it seems clear they would be able to check that it is an alien.

Those behind the reveal of the mummy have been involved in similar stunts before. In 2015, two of them claimed to have come across a mummified alien body – but in fact it was a real, mummified, human child.

The Gaia website normally charges people to watch its content, and that appears to be the motivation behind making the video. It charges as much as $9.95 per month to get access, for which people will get "300,000 minutes" of videos in return.

The Nazca lines are world famous geoglyphs, and their nearby spiral structure help explain why they were built.

Imagine staring out the window of an airplane and seeing a 1,200-foot hummingbird carved into the earth. Now imagine realizing that design was carved sometime between 1 and 700 AD. That's how the Nazca lines were first introduced to the western world.

Found in the southern desert region of Peru, the Nazca lines are massive drawings in the soil, also known as geoglyphs. They're named after the ancient civilization that lived in the region: the Nazca. The lines range from spirals to intricate designs like monkeys, llamas, and flowers. Some of the drawings are up to 1,200 feet—that's more than three football fields—which means they're best viewed from above, in a plane, or from a satellite.
But they were created long before planes or satellites, leaving generations of scholars to ponder why they were made, particularly if the Nazca people couldn't enjoy the full glory of their work. Thanks to satellite imaging, scientists believe they have a good hypothesis for the mystery behind these lines. They were linked to the most precious desert resource: water.

"They were able to use the underground water to have irrigation, and aqueducts, for agricultural activity and in this way it was possible for the Nazca to transform the desert into a garden," said Rosa Lasaponara a senior research at the National Research Council in Rome.

Lasaponara co-authored a study last year that used satellite images to investigate some unusual structures found in the landscape near the Nazca lines: spiral-shaped holes called puquios. The satellite imaging allowed the researchers to see below the surface and identify underground water channels that connected these spiral holes, and realized they were part of an advanced, ancient aqueduct system.

Underground water was led through canals to the parts of the region where the Nazca lives and farmed. The water was propelled in part by these spiral puquios, which forced wind into the underground channels to push the water through the system.

This understanding was huge, because it lent credibility to a theory many scientists already had about the Nazca lines, that they were ceremonial, and linked to water. Since the structures nearby were part of a sophisticated water system, it makes sense that the ritualistic designs would be to mark that water's location and/or to give thanks for this hydration.

"It's very clear that the puquios and Nazca lines have the same meaning, because water was the way to survive in the desert environment," Lasaponara said. "The Nazca lines were to way to thank the gods for this."

Some people still aren't satisfied with this explanation, and believe these designs are messages sent to ancient aliens or that the Nazca people invented prehistoric hot air balloons to survey their work. But Dylan Thuras, the co-founder of Atlas Obscura, a site dedicated to the world's hidden wonders, said these theories are trying to use a very modern viewpoint to explain an ancient mystery.

"If you only look at it in one framework, that it's a giant carving to be seen from above, you get completely hung up on trying to figure out how it was possible," Thuras said. "But if you understand its relation to water sources, it doesn't seem so impossible."
